Setting goals provides direction and gives you a destination to work towards ensuring a clear focus to avoid distractions that may lead you away from the objectives you want to achieve. The skill is though, to know how to write your goals in a way they are achievable and you obtain the results you desire.
Do you know exactly what you want to achieve from your efforts and where do you want to take your business? What income do you want to earn and what profile do you want to foster? Without having a destination marked out, you won’t know what you are aiming at.
Do you know what your perfect business would look like?
The first step to determining where you want to take your business is to have an understanding of exactly what you want to achieve. Not just your goals but your dreams as well, and your dreams should be BIG. When you are writing your business dreams, you can use as much imagination as you want and aim for the stars. Remember what you can perceive you can achieve, so if you can’t even imagine what the perfect business would look like then how could you ever wish for it!
Do you know what?
- Your dream for your business is…
- Your goals for your business in the next 12 months are…
- Your goals for your business in the next 3 years are…

Most people are familiar with the S.M.A.R.T. goal formula and you have probably used this system in the past yourself. The C.R.E.A.T.E. Goal methodology supports similar concepts but embraces additional elements which I believe is more congruent to supporting the values of being authentic.
6 Steps to Writing Achievable Goals
The C.R.E.A.T.E. Goal system is…
Step 1. C = CLEAR & CONCISE
Is your goal clear and concise?
- Have you begun with the end in mind?
- What will the outcome allow you to do?
- Are your goals simple, rational, but significant?
- Are they consistent with your values?
- Are your goals a must-do rather than a ‘should’ do?
- Are you prepared to make the investment and put the time in?
Step 2. R = REALISTIC
Any goal is possible, it is up to you to decide whether it is realistic or not.
Step 3. E = ECOLOGICAL
Is this goal in line with your values? Is it good for you? Is it good for your community?
Step 4. A = AS NOW
Write your goal as if it is already happening on the date you determine.
step 5. T = TOWARDS WHAT YOU WANT
Ensure your goal focused on what you want rather than what you don’t want?
Step 6. E = END STEP / EVIDENCE
What evidence do you need to know you’ve reached your target?

There are common mistakes I see people make when it comes to goal setting are:
- They don’t write them down because unless a goal is written it is simply an aspiration and lacking power.
- They write too many. To focus on achieving the results you want your goals should be manageable.
- They only focus on one area of their life
- They are too vague.
- They don’t make them measurable.
- They don’t set a due date.
- They aren’t visible.
- They don’t stretch them out of their comfort zone.
- They aren’t compelling enough.
- They don’t note the next action.
When writing your goals check as to whether they are missing any of these important factors.
Remember to…
- Write your goals down
- Write 1-year and 3-year goals
- Use the C.R.E.A.T.E Formula to write achievable goals
Remember to continue to review and edit your goals as your situation changes and by setting achievable goals, it will provide direction and give you a destination to aim towards.
