” I used to think I was afraid of public speaking, but just now, I realised I was actually afraid of audiences”.

An old joke but very real for many people.

I remember the first time put my hand up to compete in a speech contest.

We are talking a couple of decades past.

I was very glad I was wearing a long, flowing skirt as I couldn’t stop my leg from bouncing.

I was petrified I was going to forget my words.

My focus was on what I might have got wrong rather than what I knew I could do well.

The good news is I didn’t forget my words and placed third in that contest.

I have won many since culminating in winning at the Australian level and representing my country at an international contest in 2013.

What I did was learn skills on how to speak and use gestures to gain and hold the audience’s attention.

You can too.

You must overcome the fear of public speaking to be successful in business and career.

“If you’re not comfortable with public speaking – and nobody starts out comfortable; you have to learn how to be comfortable – practice. I cannot overstate the importance of practicing. Get some close friends or family members to help evaluate you, or somebody at work that you trust”

Hillary Clinton
