The concept of releasing control and knowing when to push and when to ‘go with the flow’ is not something most people can easily do.
We are still on our driving holiday with very loose plans of places we want to visit.
Although we researched the locations along the Victorian coast and countryside we have been playing it by ear.
Our itinerary was dependent on where we wanted to stay longer than planned because there was more to investigate than expected.
It has also been dependent on Mother Nature and her determination to block certain routes due to fires and weather.
Fortunately, with this trip, nothing is pre-booked and we can easily go with the flow.
I talk about going with the flow quite a bit when I am working with my clients.
How we sometimes are so determined to follow a specific path to a preset destination, that no matter what is thrown in front of us, we keep pushing through.
Sometimes that is what is necessary.
But often, it could be we are so busy being busy and pushing to get through, we miss out on seeing what could possibly be the easier path.
Can you relate?
Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.

The philosophy of “going with the flow” can be incredibly beneficial in both personal and professional contexts.
Here are 5 tips that relate to embracing this mindset effectively:
- Practice mindfulness: Being present in the moment allows you to notice the flow of life and opportunities around you. Practicing mindfulness can help reduce the compulsion to constantly push against obstacles and instead navigate through or around them more gracefully.
- Adopt flexibility in planning: While having goals is important, being rigid about the path to achieving them can lead to unnecessary stress and missed opportunities. Adopt a flexible approach to planning, allowing space for adjustments based on new insights, unexpected opportunities, or changes in circumstances.
- Learn to recognise resistance: Sometimes, continuous obstacles are a sign that we might need to reassess our direction. Learn to distinguish between normal challenges that require perseverance and persistent resistance that might indicate a need to pivot or find an alternative path.
- Cultivate intuition: Going with the flow often means listening to your intuition or gut feelings about situations or decisions. Cultivating intuition involves paying attention to your inner voice and trusting it as a guide when making decisions, especially when the path ahead is not clear.
- Embrace change as an opportunity: View unexpected changes as opportunities for new paths, not setbacks. This mindset can transform obstacle handling and align possibilities with your goals and well-being.
By incorporating these tips into your approach, you can help your clients navigate their paths with more ease and openness to the possibilities that “going with the flow” can offer.
