Are You Making This Branding Mistake Over and Over Again?

Even experienced professionals can make personal branding mistakes without realizing it. Just like in sports, small misalignments in your brand can throw everything off—leading to confusion, frustration, and missed opportunities. I learned this lesson the hard way on the golf course.

I’ve played a lot of golf, but one day, I just couldn’t swing the club properly. Every shot felt wrong. Frustrated, I walked off. I knew pushing through wasn’t the answer—I needed expert help. A chiropractor realigned me, and a golf pro adjusted my swing.

I’ve played a lot of golf in my life. I’m not a pro, but I can hold my own on the course. So you can imagine my frustration when, on this particular day, I couldn’t swing the club properly to save myself. Shot after shot went wrong. My stance felt off. My swing was stiff. The ball refused to go where I wanted it to.

At first, I pushed through. “I’ll figure it out,” I thought. But with every bad shot, I was just reinforcing poor habits. It got to the point where I was so frustrated, I did something I’d never done before—I walked off the course.

I knew something was wrong, but I also knew that trying to “fix” it in the moment, without the right guidance, would only make things worse. So I booked an appointment with my chiropractor, who quickly pointed out some misalignment issues. Then I called my golf pro, who helped me adjust my swing. Within a short time, I was back on the course, playing well again.

And that got me thinking—how many people do the same thing when building their personal brand? They push through, repeating the same mistakes, hoping things will magically improve. But without stepping back and seeking expert guidance, they’re just reinforcing bad habits.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Are You Making These Personal Branding Mistakes?

Here are five key signs you might need to step back and rethink your approach:

1. Your Messaging Feels Off

If you’re struggling to clearly articulate what you do, who you serve, and why it matters, you might be swinging in the dark. A strong brand message should be crisp, compelling, and consistent.

2. You’re Attracting the Wrong Clients (or None at All)

Just like a golf ball veering wildly off course, if your branding is unclear, you’ll either attract the wrong people or no one at all. If you’re constantly dealing with tire-kickers instead of ideal clients, it’s time to reassess your positioning.

3. Your Brand Presence Feels Scattered

Are your social media, website, and marketing materials telling the same story? Or do they feel like a mismatched set of clubs? Consistency builds trust, and if your branding is all over the place, people won’t know what to expect from you.

4. You’re Not Seeing Results

If you’re putting in the effort—networking, creating content, showing up—but nothing’s shifting, you might be reinforcing the wrong habits. Just like I needed a pro to adjust my golf swing, sometimes you need an expert to help fine-tune your brand strategy.

5. You Feel Stuck and Frustrated

Building a brand should feel exciting and rewarding, not like you’re hacking away in the rough. If you’re constantly second-guessing yourself or feeling overwhelmed, it’s a sign you need a fresh perspective.

Step Back, Get the Right Guidance, and Play Your Best Game

Just like I had to acknowledge that I couldn’t fix my golf swing alone, recognising when you need expert help with your branding is a game-changer. Whether it’s refining your messaging, clarifying your niche, or creating a standout presence, the right guidance can help you stop reinforcing bad habits and start getting real results.

So, if your brand isn’t landing the way you want it to, maybe it’s time to walk off the course, regroup, and come back stronger. Because when you get the right help, success is just one good swing away.
