In the time you have taken to open this blog, most people form a ‘first impression’.
You may have heard it takes 7 seconds. I hate to burst your bubble but you now only have 3 seconds to form a positive first impression.
Whether it is on social media, at a networking event, meeting clients or presenting on stage, it is imperative you make a positive first impression. You have just a few seconds to cement your status so should always put your best foot forward. Be genuine, have poise and be the best version of yourself always.
You should always care about how you look and how you act, because even though you might be a really good person on the inside, when you don’t take good care of yourself, when you don’t dress suitably, and when you don’t present well, you’ll likely come across as lazy, possibly arrogant, as if you really don’t care about making a good impression.
Remember, it doesn’t take a lot to make a good first impression, but it does take a little extra effort.
There are 5 techniques to create a positive first impression.
- Smile
A smile is a memorable feature when first meeting someone. Smiling makes those around you feel comfortable and decreases stress levels.
- Make Eye Contact
Nerves can sometimes cause us to look everywhere but at the person we are talking to, which can be perceived as rude. Focus on making eye contact when speaking and when listening to others.
- Speak Clearly
Having the confidence to speak up and speak clearly is essential in creating a positive first impression.
- Dress to Impress
Dress to suit the event in well-presented, ironed and clean clothes. That may sound like basic advice but I’m sure you have met people and judged them on the state of their clothes.
- Use Appropriate Body Language
Without realising it, most of us instinctively mirror each other’s body language. Think about how infectious a yawn is in a group of people. If you exhibit confidence, it will boost others to do the same.
You want to create a first impression that is positive and has people talking about you for all the right reasons.
Remember…
- A smile makes you look more attractive and welcoming to others
- Dress to suit the situation
- Be confident in who you are
Best wishes till next time.
